In recent years, it has regularly been ranked among the top rankings, winning in the category of universities providing physical education and sport training. Apart from its didactic achievements, AWF also boasts outstanding sports results, on an international scale, of our students and graduates.
The Krakow AWF was established in to 1893, when the Jagiellonian University initiated a Scientific Course for candidates for Gymnastic, which in 1913 was transformed into the Studium of Physical Education. The Studium at the Faculty of Medicine, was a pioneering institution of university education of physical education teachers in Poland. In 1950 the School was transformed into an independent Higher School of Physical Education, and in 1972 it was renamed the Academy of Physical Education and today it is still a well-known University of Physical Education and Sport, cooperating with sports and research centres all over the world.
The university currently educates about 4,000 students studying in three faculties and offers 8 different Master programs and a PhD program. All offered courses and programs lead to officially recognized higher education degrees: 8 Bachelor degrees, 4 Master degrees and Doctorate degree. The institution currently employs approximately 900 employees, including over 500 under an employment contract. Apart from its didactic achievements, the Kraków AWF has many sports groups, which educate successful athletes, both men and women, in various disciplines such as: athletics, sports gymnastics, volleyball, handball, futsal. Moreover, many of the most successful Polish sportsmen are graduates of AWF Kraków, among others: Kamil Stoch (ski jumping), Agnieszka Radwańska (tennis) or Justyna Kowalczyk (cross-country skiing), Radosław Zawrotniak (fencing) or Krzysztof Maria Duda (chess). The AWF has high quality sports and educational facilities, and university professors cooperate with sports and research centers around the world. In 2018 the Central Science and Research Laboratory (CLNB) was established to carry out scientific, development and commissioned research. Individual CLNB laboratories conduct comprehensive research in the area of physical culture sciences. Due to cooperation with various athletes, clubs, organizations, associations and sports federations, AWF employees have well-established experience in conducting various types of research. Large research facilities, constantly developed and improved, make AWF a modern, prestigious sports complex. The AWF also has a women's futsal team.
